To Members of the Santa Clara County Medical Association,

With great regret, I inform you of the death of

President 2009

which occurred on January 27, 2023,
in the fifty-eighth year of his life

Dr. Sutkin grew up on Long Island, New York. He attended the State University of New York at Binghamton, class of 1985 and the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, class of 1989. He subsequently completed his plastic surgery residency at Stanford University in 1995 which included a clinical fellowship at the Buncke Clinic in San Francisco in 1993.

Dr. Sutkin joined the Santa Clara County Medical Association (SCCMA) in 1995 and immediately immersed himself in the functioning of the medical association. In 1996, Dr. Sutkin served on the Professional Standards Committee, and quickly became heavily involved in the association filling positions on the Finance Committee, Awards Committee, Nominating Committee, Medical-Legal Liaison Committee, and Executive Committee. He served as delegate to the CMA House of Delegates as a Region 1 Councilor. From 2001 - 2007, he served as Vice President for Member Services, before being elected president in 2008. In 2010, he was featured in The Bulletin as he passed SCCMA presidency to Thomas Dailey, MD. In 2017, Dr. Sutkin was the award recipient for Outstanding Contribution to the Medical Association at the Annual Awards Gala.

Dr. Sutkin was a member of the medical staff at Good Samaritan Hospital from 1997 – 2021.  He had a busy private practice at offices in San Jose and Los Gatos beginning in 1995 where he practiced alongside Dr. Timothy Weibel for 28 years. Dr. Sutkin was an integral member of the trauma surgery teams at San Jose Medical Center and Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

Affectionately known as “Howie,” Dr. Sutkin was always upbeat, friendly, and cheerful. In the OR, he was an excellent plastic surgeon taking a genuine interest in all who worked with him. He was an avid sailor and enjoyed riding motorcycles with friends.  Dr. Sutkin was a doting father and loving husband. He leaves behind his wife Erica, son Craig, and daughter Natasha along will fond memories of his warm smile.

SCCMA extends our deepest and sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
